The priorities of the new project “Sustainable Transition to Energy Efficiency in Moldova (STEEM)”, as well as the progress of the implementation of the second Project for Improving the Efficiency of the Centralized Thermal Energy Supply System in Chisinau (PIESACET-2) were addressed within the framework of a high-level mission of the World Bank, which is in the Republic of Moldova. For this purpose, a series of meetings and on-site visits were held, with the participation of all parties involved.

During the discussions, the Director of the Consolidated Unit for Implementation and Monitoring of Energy Projects (UCIPE), Ruslan Surugiu, made a presentation of the progress on technical, financial, environmental and social aspects, as well as other priorities related to the PIESACET-2 project. At the same time, he informed the World Bank specialists about the stages completed so far by the authorities together with the implementation unit to ensure the conditions for the entry into force of the new STEEM Project.

In this context, the Project Team Leader from The World Bank representative, Roger Coma Cunill, thanked all parties involved for the important work done so far, with reference to both current and previous projects, which are already delivering results. He also mentioned that the World Bank provides support to the Republic of Moldova in various projects aimed at the country's energy security, as well as increasing the capacity to produce and distribute quality energy from different sources.

During a fact-finding visit to the Centrala Electrică cu Termoficare, Sursa 1, the General Director of Termoelectrica S.A., Iurie Razlovan, mentioned that the projects implemented so far have a positive impact both in terms of improving the quality of district heating services and in terms of the savings that are recorded daily, thanks to the new, modern and energy-efficient equipment installed in both SACET efficiency improvement projects, financed by the World Bank.

Within the PIESACET-2 Project, 155 Individual Thermal Points were installed in about 100 residential blocks and public institutions in the capital. At the same time, the pumping installation for supplying steam boiler no. 2 of the Power Plant with Heating, Source-1, was modernized. Two other components of the Project refer to the construction of new efficient power plants with a total electrical power of about 55 MW (or higher) and thermal power of at least 43 Gcal/h., which is in the tender process, as well as the implementation of a comprehensive feasibility study on the development of Termoelectrica S.A.. This project is carried out by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, through the Ministry of Energy and UCIPE, with the support of the World Bank. The beneficiary of the PIESACET-2 Project is Termoelectrica S.A..

The “Sustainable Transition to Energy Efficiency in Moldova (STEEM)” project aims to energy-renovate 46 schools across the country. Thus, over 46 thousand young people, teachers and employees of educational institutions will benefit from an increased level of comfort. This project will be implemented by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, through the Ministry of Energy and UCIPE, with the support of the Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) “Moldova – Development, Resilience and Opportunities for Well-being (M-GROW), managed by the World Bank Group. The founding partners of M-GROW include Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom, which jointly contributed to the MDTF.
